“Your hands are but the instruments The Almighty uses.”
The Surgeon’s Prayer: A Memoir of Faith, Scalpel, and Spirit is the memoir of Dr. Thomas Calhoun, a Black surgeon who came of age in the segregated South, trained at Meharry and Howard, and practiced general and vascular surgery for decades. Blending personal history, memorable patient stories, and reflections on faith, it explores what it means to hold a life in your hands and to see your hands as instruments of the Almighty. The book also recounts his own journey as a patient—his 43 days of prostate cancer treatment and closes with wisdom for young surgeons. At its heart is the title prayer: a surgeon’s plea for humility, patience, courage, and the wisdom to know when not to operate.
